Gina Williams-Ghouse is a Noongar singer and songwriter whose work brings language, music and storytelling together.

A Balladong, Whadjuk and Goreng woman with links to the Gitja people of the East Kimberley, Gina writes and sings in Noongar. Her work reaches across recordings, schools, festivals and the stage, making space for people to connect through song.

A life in stories

Before and alongside her work as a musician, Gina has worked as a journalist and storyteller. Her published work and performances share a commitment to community and to bringing Noongar language to new audiences.

She has performed in Australia and internationally, with appearances including Cardiff’s Llais Festival of Voice, the Festival of Pacific Arts in Guam and World Expo 2025 in Osaka. Each setting brings the music to a different gathering of people.

A musical partnership

With her late husband, guitarist and composer Guy Ghouse, Gina created a body of work that includes albums, books and two operas. Kalyakoorl, Bindi Bindi, Koorlangka and Koort offer different ways into their music, from songs for children to recorded live performances.

Their collaboration also moved onto the opera stage. Koolbardi wer Wardong premiered in 2021; Wundig wer Wilura followed in 2024. Both were commissioned by West Australian Opera.

Language in many places

The work continues beyond the concert hall. Schools, choirs and community groups can encounter the music through performances, recordings and the songbook Kalyakoorl, ngalak warangka. In 2025, Gina’s children’s work Aliwah Bardinar was presented at the AWESOME Children’s Festival with Breaksea Youth Theatre.

Recognition

Gina is a Member of the Order of Australia. She received the WA Music Industry’s Indigenous Artist of the Year award in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2022, and was inducted into the WA Women’s Hall of Fame in 2018.

At the centre of this work is a simple invitation: spend time with the songs, listen to the stories, and discover the connections they make possible.
